In 1858, a dramatic event unfolds as the Pope’s forces remove young Edgardo Mortara from his Jewish family in Bologna, invoking a controversial baptism as their warrant. Amidst their heartbreak, the Mortaras fight tirelessly to retrieve their son, garnering widespread support and sparking a significant political confrontation. Their battle not only tests the faltering papal authority of the era but also draws a poignant line to contemporary themes of faith, freedom, and identity, making Edgardo’s story a timeless reflection on belief and belonging.
