Nov 30, 2018 - Felix for SoGerman
Do you sometimes feel like you are hearing the same music over and over again?
Reasons for this could be the radio station or a catchy tune from one of your favourite artists. In this blog post I want to share with you some really gifted German artists and their tunes – and *WARNING* – you may not be able to get them out of your head. I love going to concerts, so every artist I am recommending here, I have experienced live, on stage. I tried not to be too narrow in my choice of genres, in the end, this blog post reflects my personal taste. Germany has so many talented young artists – so get over Nena and Rammstein – and start exploring!
Fil Bo Riva
With his remarkable, smokey voice, Fil Bo Riva, born in Rome now living in Berlin, really gets crowds going. The singer-songwriter mixes genres. His debut album will be coming out in next spring.
Fil Bo Riva always liked the “little weird mystery” behind movies from the 60s. He says: “Go Rilla as a song was certainly inspired by the feeling of unbridled passion and the rapturous idea of escaping the real world, and I wanted to somehow translate this kind of ‘other world’ into the video for the song and the album in general.”
This song is dynamic and full of energy. The powerful guitar and great hooks will get you up dancing. Promise!
Lilly Among Clouds
The ideas are in her head, and her head is in the clouds – that’s how Lilly Among Clouds was born. Meanwhile she is convinced that “big stages mean incredible fun.” So it’s no wonder that she’s aiming to make it on to one of the biggest stages in the world – the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 in Tel Aviv. Her songs can be dramatic and calm, but also multi-layered, danceable, and poppy.
Get Well Soon
Get Well Soon is a project by the German artist Konstantin Gropper. His music is completely self-made, and during recording sessions, he plays most of the instruments himself. The important German newspaper Der Spiegel wrote this about one of his albums: “an ambitious work that is unparalleled in the younger German music scene.”
FEMME SCHMIDT
Femme Schmidt is a German singer-songwriter mixing pop and jazz. In 2010 she worked with Guy Chambers, a famous British producer and songwriter – she has also worked for Robbie Williams.
Her song Heart-Shaped Gun gives you the feeling of a dark James Bond movie. Goosebumps guaranteed.
Germany has so many talented young artists – so get over Nena and Rammstein - and start exploring!
MELE
I first heard MELE at a small but really good festival at Lake Constance in southern Germany. MELE is naughty, brave, and different. Her lyrics are incredible and funny – and a good reason to learn German.
Giant Rooks
The indie-pop-band Giant Rooks was founded in Hamm in 2014. Giant Rooks are, put simply, a band to love. Perfect for a rainy (or snowy) day with a cup of warm tea and delicious cookies in front of a cozy fireplace. Giant Rooks have already been the opening act for Kraftklub and Von Wegen Lisbeth.
MINE and AB Syndrom
Defying any genre, experimental omnichord sounds shimmer through their songs between strong piano melodies. Driving drums, minimalist guitar riffs, and choral interludes suggest a ghostly and epic feeling.
In her song Spiegelbild, MINE works together with the Berlin Duo AB Syndrom. What a great collaboration! The song has many good parts, but my favourite part is the rap at the end. Perfect auto-tune elements!
Alltag
Alltag is the future of German EDM (Electronic Dance Music). He hasn’t produced many songs so far, but what he has produced is very promising. A diamond in the rough! Where Have You Been features the distinctive voice of singer Norma Jean Martine, while Alltag layers on Spanish-sounding guitar licks, warm floods of bass, and expressive melodies.
MarieMarie
Not only could MarieMarie sing opera with her extraordinary voice, but she also plays the harp. Not your normal combo for an upbeat pop tune. Cotton Candy Hurricane is my favourite song of her’s. She created the expression “folktronic pop” because she mixes folk, electronic music and pop. She has already opened for the famous Pet Shop Boys.
Leoniden
Oops, they did it again. Leoniden, my all time favourite band, has put out their second album. If you have Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal or a similar streaming service listen to their new song Slow. I simply love it. While typing Slow into your online music player, why not have a listen to the following song from their first album, a brilliant track:
