What is your blog Schnitzel & Poutine about?

We wanted to inspire both countries (Canada and Germany) to take in the great outdoors and scenery in both countries. Knowing that Canada offers many destinations for German tourists, we wanted to promote areas of interest that would attract more tourists to Canada; all the while showing the rich cultural history of areas in Germany that would entice travelling enthusiasts in both nations. By combining humour and great photography, we created a travel and lifestyle blog that brings a Canadian (Poutine) and a German (Schnitzel) together to travel around both countries and create some awesome content.

What is the story behind Schnitzel & Poutine?

Schnitzel and Poutine came together many years ago after a long-distance relationship where one of us was living and working in Canada and the other was finishing her studies in Germany. The union of both of these individuals happened in November 2015 when Schnitzel moved to Canada to further their relationship. Ultimately, to keep herself busy until she received her work permit, Schnitzel explored her fascination with all the destinations in Canada that were publicized in Germany, e.g. Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper. But all of these “images” were really showing one side of Canada. Poutine and Schnitzel both thought there was more to the story than what was in the media. So, together, they came up with the idea that they could show more of a POV-style take on these destinations, and that is where it all began. It started with the most touristy destinations and grew from there. Both Schnitzel & Poutine wanted to help others in their quest for cool, exciting, new and fun destinations or locations to check out, first in Canada and then in Germany. Thus, Schnitzel & Poutine was born.

So far, what has been the most exciting place you have travelled to?

Both Schnitzel and Poutine have been to numerous places in North America and Europe on their own. Together, we have gone on road trips in North America and Europe where each destination had its own allure. In Seattle, we went to the very first Starbucks, in Tacoma, we went to the waterpark. Or, just minutes from Calgary in Okotoks, we went to Big Rock. In Europe, we went to Albert Einstein’s birthplace. When travelling together, Poutine’s favourite place is beside Schnitzel because home is where the heart is.

What was your most exciting adventure during your visit to Canada?

One of the most magical places for Schnitzel & Poutine would have to be Emerald Lake in Field, British Columbia. Being there in both summer and winter was very special. There is gorgeous scenery to take in and enjoy there in any season. In the summertime, you can see the deep colours of the blue water with the gorgeous mountain scenery. In winter, you have the snow-dusted cabins and foliage all while sitting under the star-streaked skyline in a hot tub, sipping some bubbly.

What was your most exciting adventure during your visit to Germany?

Obviously, being Schnitzel’s home she has travelled extensively in Germany. However, any place with a castle is her favourite place. The architecture, history and atmosphere of those places are very unique. Castle “Lichtenstein”, that we portraited on both our and your Instagram, is one of her favourites, as well as Lake of Constance in southern Germany.

For many people, Canada is a place of longing. In your opinion, what makes Canada so special for so many people?

We think it is a mixture of breathtaking nature, emerald lakes and, most importantly, kind and friendly people. You feel welcome right away and there is a lot of space to explore and get lost. However, if you want some company there is always a friendly Canadian that is interested in helping you and keeping you company.

You visited the Canadian Rockies and the German Alps on your trips. How would you compare them?

Both are gorgeous, Germany is beautiful and has many tourist attractions just like Canada. While the Canadian Rockies are just as beautiful with the glacier blue lakes; the main difference is Canada has more wildlife. We do not intend to claim this as a scientific fact, we feel the chances of seeing a deer, moose, or even a bear are higher in Canada than in the Alps.

When you think of cities in Germany and Canada, how different are they and how do they feel different?

Germany obviously has a different climate and history thus there are many differences in architecture and population. Also, in German cities, everything happens downtown while in cities like Calgary people only work downtown and go back to where they live in the suburbs at the end of the day. In Germany, public transportation is more readily available while, in Calgary, you need a car to be able to get around faster (unless you are ok to spend a dime and a half on rides).

What do you think that Canada and Germany, as diverse as both countries are, have in common?

Both countries thrive to show off the beauty of their country and teach locals and tourists about their history. Let’s not forget, both countries love beer!

(If it’s not too personal…) Why did you decide to live in Canada and not Germany?

Schnitzel decided to move to Canada for her Poutine. She also really enjoyed the friendliness of the people as well as the space and freedom you have here. She just fell in love with Calgary and the lifestyle here and even though she misses Germany sometimes, this is her new home and she feels very happy here.
