THE GERMAN EMBASSY IN CANADA PRESENTS:
VIRTUAL READINGS BY GERMAN AND CANADIAN WRITERS

Several book festivals, many book tours and hundreds of literary events have been canceled due to the corona virus pandemic this year. Though the Frankfurt Book Fair will be taking place, it will be very different from what we have become accustomed to. 2020 was to be the year that Germany could really get to know Canadian literature on a much more intimate level as the 2020 fair’s Guest of Honour – a high honour indeed! As such, the German Embassy in Canada would like to contribute to the literary spirit of 2020 and present a few authors from Germany and Canada. This, the third such live virtual event will be taking place on Friday, June 12th, 2020 at 4PM EDT on @GermanyInCanada Instagram. Martin Beyer will be reading from his novel I Was There (Und ich war da).

Martin Beyer was born 1976 in Frankfurt am Main and lives in Bamberg. After studying German language and literature and obtaining a doctorate, Martin Beyer is working as a freelance writer and lecturer in creative writing. He received awards and grants for his literary work, and in 2019, he was a finalist for the “Ingeborg Bachmann Preis” in Klagenfurt. He regularly hosts the talk show “Villa Wild” at ETA Hoffmann Theater in Bamberg. In 2019, his most recent novel “Und ich war da” (“I Was There”) was published by Ullstein.

About I Was There (Und ich war da) by Martin Beyer
August Unterseher had many opportunities to oppose the Nazi regime. He used none of them. “I Was There” is the story of an ordinary man, the son of a farmer, who stumbles into the darkness of his time. First, he is recruited by the Hitler Youth, then by the Wehrmacht. The end of WWII leaves him disabled and working on his father’s farm, until he volunteers to assist the Nazis at the Scholl siblings’ execution. At the end of his life, he tries to understand why everything unfurled the way it did. Why he survived, while others did not. Why he became an accomplice, while others selflessly died for their ideals. Moving and thought-provoking, this novel boldly confronts the readers with the question: what would you have done?
