Research Grants in Germany • DAAD

The DAAD – German Academic Exchange Service provides support for research stays in Germany conducted by:

  • PhD students at the dissertation stage who are enrolled at Canadian universities
    or
  • Recent postdocs from Canadian universities (received doctoral degree no more than 4 years prior to application deadline).

These grants are open to scholars from any field of study who can demonstrate the necessity to travel to Germany for their research.

This program supports work on a research project at a state or state-recognized university or a non-university research institute in Germany, which is being carried out in agreement with a scientific supervisor in Germany.

DAAD is able to provide grantees a monthly living allowance while in Germany along with a travel allowance for transatlantic travel and insurance coverage while in Germany.

The duration of this funding is as follows:

  • PhD students: 2 to 12 months
  • Postdocs: 2 to 6 months.

The next deadline for this grant is: April 30, 2026. Applications filed then are for stays in Germany beginning on or after October 1, 2026.
