75 Years of Germany-Canada Diplomatic Relations

Welcome to the central hub for the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Canada.

Germany and Canada are marking 75 years of diplomatic relations in 2026 and this special anniversary is taking place at a moment when our partnership is becoming more strategically important than ever. Although the two countries are geographically distant, global instability—especially Russia’s war against Ukraine—has pushed us closer together politically, economically and militarily. Both nations share commitments to NATO, the G7 and multilateral cooperation, and we face similar challenges in defending open, democratic societies in an era of renewed power politics.

This alignment was highlighted at the 2026 World Economic Forum, where Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney argued that democracies must pair their values with real economic and military strength. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz echoed this view, emphasizing the need for clearer national interests, stronger defence capabilities and deeper cooperation with trusted partners like Canada. Our governments have since expanded joint efforts in defence, energy, technology and support for Ukraine. Key initiatives include a hydrogen alliance and a new agreement on digital and sovereign technologies.

Beyond politics, the relationship is reinforced by deep social and cultural ties. Nearly three million Canadians have German heritage, and tens of thousands of Canadians live in Germany. Academic exchanges, city partnerships and decades of military presence have created lasting personal connections.

Economically, the partnership is thriving. Germany is Canada’s largest trading partner in the EU, and bilateral trade continues to grow—boosted significantly by the CETA free trade agreement. While most of the agreement is already in effect, some EU countries still have concerns about its impact on local industries.

As we look ahead, this long‑standing partnership is entering a new chapter filled with renewed momentum and growing strategic importance — a reminder of how much we can achieve when we move forward together in an ever‑changing world.
